Just Imagine...

Imagine if your plant was highly reliable, cost-effective and safe. All at the same time. Each and every day.

No more firefighting and chasing around for parts or specialist services at the last minute. Instead all jobs are thoroughly planned and scheduled. When they’re due to be done everything is ready for your technicians to efficiently execute the work.

No more quick fixes that you know won’t last. Instead, you apply simple technique to identify the source of the problem and remove it.

No more bickering between Operations and Maintenance. Instead, you have productive daily meetings where you agree priorities for new work requests. You jointly execute a frozen weekly schedule.

No more repeat failures. Instead of being great at fixing things that have broken many times before, you’ve become great at eliminating the sources of those failures.

No more useless PMs that just waste your limited time and do nothing to improve equipment reliability. Instead you understand your equipment’s dominant failure modes and have identified cost effective tasks to deal with them.

Working in an environment like this is stimulating. The culture is strong and positive. The relationships are trusting and you can put your energy into improving things. It’s an environment in which the people and the plant thrive. Sadly though, not many plants around the world operate in an environment like this. But it’s possible. In fact, there’s less stopping you than you might think.

Two decades of world-wide experience encountering the same problem again and again

Erik Hupjé,
Founder of R2 Reliability

Hi, my name is Erik Hupjé, founder of R2 Reliability and I developed the Road to Reliability™ framework. It’s unique in its simplicity yet it’s highly effective.

For the last 20 years I’ve worked in asset management, and specifically maintenance & reliability in the
upstream oil & gas industry. I’ve worked in The Netherlands, United Kingdom, the Philippines, the Sultanate of Oman and Australia.

Everywhere I’ve seen the same problems again and again.

People in charge of maintenance and reliability are busy fighting fires. Working in highly reactive
environments. Almost never a chance to look ahead and think about longer term improvements. Running from crisis to crisis.

As an industry we know how we should manage maintenance and reliability. But within
individual organisations this knowledge is often not there where it matters.

Too often those in charge of maintenance & reliability don’t know how to avoid the fires. Or they don’t have the skills to bring about the change that will stop the fires.

The Road to Reliability Framework

There are many frameworks for reliability improvement. Most are unnecessarily complicated. The best performing plants in the world are the best, because they focus on the few basics that really matter. We have created a simple, yet proven framework to improve reliability focussing on 4 Essential Elements.

Planning & Scheduling

Increase your maintenance workforce by 35% without hiring anyone. Reduce costs, improve safety and increase morale.

How can the Road to Reliability help you?

Improving your plant’s reliability is one of the best investments you can make because
it will make your plant more reliable, more profitable and safer
Increase Production & Profit

Increase Production & Profit

When you increase your plant’s reliability, you increase uptime and thus production. Increase your production and you increase company profit. Suddenly the world becomes a better place.
Reduce Costs

Reduce Costs

That increase in profit due to improved
reliability is bigger than just the production gain, because Reliable Plants operate at lower costs. Less things break and without the reactive fire fighting there is less waste.becomes a better place.

Improve Safety

Improve Safety

Experience shows that reliable plants are
safer too. Less unexpected events and better lanned work leads to a more stable working environment with less surprises and fewer incidents.

Become Less Reactive

Become Less Reactive

With more reliable equipment and a more stable working environment you can focus on proactive activities and really drive continuous improvement.
Reduce Stress

Reduce Stress

With less call-outs and reduced fire-fighting, stress reduces, moral improves and your workforce is simply more motivated to do a good job.
Great ROI

But the best news? Improving plant reliability requires relatively small investments and offers excellent return on investment (ROI). In short, improving your plant’s reliability is one of the best investments you can make

How do you improve reliability and sustain it?

After decades of experience, gained by working at different plants around the world three things have become very clear to me:
You will only ever be as good as your team

You will only ever be as good as your team

No matter what industry you work in, what country you live in, or how big or small your team is, your success is determined by your team. So, invest in them!
You must train, coach and mentor your team

in the fundamental processes that underpin good maintenance and improve reliability. Those fundamental processes are the 4 Essential Elements.
You must implement change using your team, not consultant

You must implement change using your team, not consultant

with your own team. It’s by far the most cost-effective and most sustainable approach. That’s why we teach your team not just what they need to know but also how to implement it.

The Road to Reliability™ applies to your industry too

The Road to Reliablity™ Framework is industry-agnostic. It applies to all asset-intensive industries, and are our clients hail from a wide range of industries. And that’s because the principles that underpin reliability and the practices that drive good maintenance don’t change from industry to industry. Sure every industry has its unique perspectives on things, but when it comes to the 4 Essential Elements of Planning & Scheduling, Defect Elimination, Preventive Maintenance, and Leadership & Culture, they apply no matter what industry.

Reliability Improvement

When you increase your plant’s reliability, you increase your production. Increase your production and you increase your company profit.

That increase in company profit is often even bigger than just the production gain, because Reliable Plants operate at lowe costs. And experience shows that reliable plants are safer too. Higher reliability leads to less safety incidents. That’s why I like to say that when it comes to reliability improvement you can have your cake and eat it.

But the best news? Improving plant reliability requires relatively small investment. And if done well reliability improvements offer huge returns on investment.

In short, improving your plant’s reliability is one of the best investments you can make.

Your Maintenance Productivity Is Lower Than You Think

In the 1980s DuPont commissioned the largest benchmarking study of maintenance and reliability practice over done. It covered 3500 sites across North America, Europe and Japan. It was so extensive that it’s still referred to today.

The study showed that the top 5% of these companies – the “Best of the Best” – do the basics very well. And those basics included Planning and Scheduling.

The DuPont study – and many studies since then – have shown that maintenance
productivity levels of 20% – 30%
are typical across industries.

That means you get 2-3 hours actual maintenance time out of a technician working a 10-hour shift. But, it doesn’t have to be like that. You don’t have to settle for low levels of maintenance
productivity. Implementing an effective planning and scheduling process allows you to
improve your productivity to 45%.

Improving your productivity from 30% to 45%, is the equivalent of increasing your
workforce by 35% without hiring anyone.

It’s been done around the world. Over and over again. It’s not rocket science and you can do it too using our online training and proven implementation framework.

Not Sure What Your Current Maintenance Productivity Is?

With our easy-to-use Wrench Time Calculator you and your team can easily assess your current wrench time.

And then calculate how much value you can add to the business by improving your wrench time.

How To Implement Planning & Scheduling

Most organisations that implement maintenance planning and scheduling do not achieve the long-term results they expected. Often the improvements don’t last, even when the initial implementation seemed successful.

But, it doesn’t have to be like that. This article outlines a structured, proven
approach that has worked in many organisations.
An approach using basic project management principles. Combined with a strong focus on change management.

Without Planning & Scheduling You Will Fail

Planning and Scheduling is one of the 4 Essential Elements on the Road to Reliability™. Planning and scheduling or work management as it’s often called, ensures the right work gets done, at the right time, with the right tools, materials and people.

Without an advanced planning and scheduling process you’ll never achieve high reliability. In this article I’ll explain why that’s the case. I’ll also give an overview of what a work management process should look like.

How To Sell Planning & Scheduling To Your CEO

Many implementations of advance Planning and Scheduling fail. often because senior management was never on board to begin with.

In this article, I’ll show you how to fix that. I’ll show you how to sell planning and scheduling to your CEO. And in such a way that he actually wants you to implement it successfully.

I’ll talk about your ‘CEO’, but it could also be your Plant Manager that you need.

Learn & Improve™ Leadership Skills

You do not need to be a CEO to ‘lead’. To succeed we need leaders at all levels of an organisation.

And there is a simple, yet highly effective model to improve leadership that we can all learn to apply.

It breaks a fluffy subject like leadership into 4 practical steps that we can apply at all levels of an organisation.

These 4 steps are:

VISION - Create a compelling vision of a better future.

MOTIVATION - Motivate people to deliver the vision. Show them a better future in a world of Reliability. A better future for themeselves. And a better future for your organisation as a whole.

ACCOUNTABILITY - Manage the delivery of the vision by breaking it into small steps. Hold people accountable to deliver those small steps. Make progress visible and celebrate success. Often and early.

COACHING - Share your knowledge and experience to help your people perform better. And build more trusting relationships along the way.
